Presidents' message

Dear Friends,

If you were among the 150 or so who attended our Leadership Seminar with star adjunct Kellogg professor Pierre Casse last May, you will probably agree that this year's main event was an incredible success. Set at the prestigious SAP Lounge in Brussels, this event was also the opportunity to kick-start the new alliance between Kellogg and Solvay Business School for executive education, with Pierre Casse teaching at both institutions and the initial joint leadership course. After hearing Pierre Casse describing some of the leadership isssues facing managers today ("most companies are sick"), he offered some advice like "your only loyalty is to yourself and your family, not to your company", encouraged us to create within our company "bubbles of sanity and excellence" and offered leadership practical tools to take away. The presentation received a fantastic response from the audience and the evening ended with a cocktail reception and networking.

Worldwide Wednesday

Don't miss the first ever Kellogg Worldwide Wednesday. On September 22 all Kellogg clubs in the world will hold a get-together for generations of alumni, from freshly graduated to the pre-Jacobs area. In the Benelux events will take place both in Brussels and Amsterdam. In Brussels we will be greeted by a special guest, the legendary Dean Ed Wilson.

After that we'll move to our two fall "classics", MBA2U on October 2 and the Chicago Blues with U of C alumni a month later.

Looking forward to seeing you there. Best,

Philippe Laval
President

Leadership (by Pierre Casse)

Debrief previous case
Situation recap

You are a market leader and your people are coming up with a lot of ideas related to the expansion of your business. You have just redefined the vision of the team and you know that your people are committed to it. You must leave for a business trip and you are thinking about what you should say to the team before leaving.

Options

A. Do not say anything.
B. Share some of your key business ideas about the future of your business. Keep them thinking.
C. Have a last meeting and check that everything is right.
D. State your expectations and set up a time table before leaving.

100% of respondents choose for option B (yet is was not statistically significant ;-).

Here is what your choice could
mean from a leadership perspective:

  • If you have selected A: You are not afraid of trusting other people and empowering them
  • If you have selected B. You enjoy challenging people and inspiring them
  • If you have selected C: You like to work in teams and share the responsibilities with the team members
  • If you have selected D: You believe in leading charge and being up-front. You want to be a role-model

This is of course rough and very indicative. Your leadership effectiveness will depend on the match between your leadership behavior and the requirements of the situation you are in
To know more about this you can visit the following website: www.orgmonitor.com

It seems that in this case A is the best way to cope because the team is in good shape (market leader) and the team members commited (Outstanding performers). To empower them means basically that the leader trusts them!
